As the Edo state governorship election scheduled for September 21 draws near, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the pricing for its Expression of Interest and Nomination forms, revealing a hefty fee for aspirants seeking the party’s ticket.
According to the schedule released in Abuja, aspirants eyeing the APC ticket will need to pay a substantial N50 million. This includes the nomination form priced at N40 million and the Expression of Interest form at N10 million. The announcement was made by the APC National Organising Secretary, Sualiman Muhammadu Arugungu.
In a bid to promote diversity and inclusivity within the party, the APC has introduced some concessions. Female aspirants and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) will only pay for the Expression of Interest form, while the nomination form is free of charge for them. Additionally, youth aspirants aged between 25 and 40 years will enjoy a 50% discount on the nomination form but are still required to purchase the Expression of Interest form.
These measures, as stated by the party, align with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act. While the financial requirements are steep, the APC’s decision reflects its commitment to complying with legal frameworks guiding electoral processes in Nigeria.
The sale of forms, along with delegates’ forms, is set to take place from January 10 to 29, 2024. Aspirants must submit their completed forms and documents by February 5, 2024. The screening of candidates is scheduled for February 8 and 9, leading to the delegates’ congress on February 10. The party’s primary, where the flag bearer will be selected, is fixed for February 17, 2024.
The campaign for the APC standard bearer is expected to commence on April 24, setting the stage for a highly anticipated electoral contest in Edo state.
