The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has raised allegations against Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), suggesting that he is behind a plot to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State. In a press statement issued on Monday and signed by its President, Prof. Benjamin Ogle Okaba, the INC labeled the supposed impeachment plot as selfish, nepotistic, and barbaric.
The group expressed deep concerns regarding the potential consequences of the move to impeach Governor Fubara, suggesting that it could lead to unwarranted insecurity and instability in Rivers State and the broader Niger Delta region.
Furthermore, the INC cautioned Minister Wike to focus on his responsibilities as the FCT minister and refrain from interfering with the political landscape in the state in pursuit of his personal and self-serving objectives.
The statement read, “The INC considers this development very worrisome and capable of generating an unwarranted state of insecurity and instability that can throw the entire Niger Delta and the Nigerian economy into serious crises.”
According to the group, Governor Fubara has not committed any actions warranting his removal, except for his decision not to remain subservient to the immediate past Governor. The INC vehemently condemned what it described as a barbaric, selfish, nepotistic, and unconstitutional act that could jeopardize the process of democratic consolidation in Nigeria.
The INC called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and caution his FCT Minister. Additionally, they urged all Ijaw individuals and supporters to rally behind the Governor of Rivers State, emphasizing that injustice against one Ijaw individual represents an injustice against the entire Ijaw community, which comprises over 40 million people worldwide.
The Ijaw National Congress made it clear that they are closely monitoring the situation and will take appropriate action when the time is right.
