The family of the late Onyeka Onwenu has announced that the renowned singer’s burial will take place by the end of August 2024.
This update came during a condolence visit from a delegation of the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) at Onwenu’s Lagos residence in Ikoyi.
Onwenu, who passed away last Tuesday following a performance at Chief Stella Okoli’s 80th birthday celebration, was a prominent member of MCSN. Her sons, Abram and Tjiani, conveyed their plans to honor her wishes by arranging her burial as soon as possible. Details of the burial arrangements will be disclosed in the coming days.
During the condolence visit, King Sunny Ade, visibly emotional, paid tribute to Onwenu, writing in the condolence register, “Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever.”
The delegation also included flutist Tee Mac, who pledged to perform at Onwenu’s memorial service, as well as Kenny Ogugbe and Mayo Ayilaran, General Manager of MCSN.
In a reflective piece published in 2021, Onwenu had previously expressed her preference for a modest and private funeral. She had requested a quiet and swift farewell, urging her loved ones to celebrate her life with prayers, light-hearted moments, and laughter rather than elaborate mourning.
Onwenu, who left a lasting legacy through her music and activism, passed away at Reddington Hospital in Lagos following her collapse at the birthday party for Mrs. Stella Okoli.
