In a decisive judgment on Friday, the Supreme Court declared Uba Sani as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election in Kaduna State. The court’s decision affirmed a previous ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had declared Uba Sani as the duly elected governor of Kaduna State on November 24, 2023.
The legal challenge was initiated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Mohammed Ashiru Isa. They contested the outcome of the governorship election, alleging that Uba Sani was not duly elected by a majority of valid votes cast. The PDP further argued that the election was marred by corrupt practices and non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.
During the proceedings, the lead judgment delivered by Justice Tijani Abubakar emphasized that the appellants had failed to present any substantial arguments before the court. Justice Abubakar deemed the appeal as vexatious, frivolous, and lacking in merit. Consequently, he upheld the judgments of the lower courts, affirming Uba Sani’s election as governor of Kaduna State.
The Supreme Court’s verdict concludes a legal battle over the governorship election, providing a definitive resolution to the contested outcome.
