Residents of Zurmi town, the administrative center of Zurmi Local Government Area in Zamfara State, were forced to flee following a recent attack by bandits. The assault, which occurred on Tuesday at approximately 5 pm, instilled fear among the populace, leading to a mass exodus from the town.
Babangida Mohammed, a resident of Zurmi, recounted the terrifying ordeal to journalists, revealing that armed criminals descended on the town, unleashing indiscriminate gunfire. In the wake of the attack, many individuals sought refuge in the nearby bush, while others fortified their homes to safeguard against the marauding bandits.
Expressing concern over the security situation, Mohammed highlighted the inadequacy of military personnel deployed to the town. He stressed that the bandits, undeterred, continued to sow violence and move freely across different areas of Zurmi.
“We are in a pathetic situation because the military personnel sent to fight the bandits are not enough. The bandits are currently occupying the town and shooting sporadically while the soldiers are also pursuing the bandits,” Mohammed remarked.
He further urged security agencies to intervene promptly, emphasizing the urgent need for reinforcement before the situation escalates. Mohammed pointed out that the bandits, emboldened by their large numbers, appeared undeterred by the military presence.
“The bandits are in large numbers, that is why they are not afraid of the military personnel who are here to foil the attack,” he stated.
As of the time of reporting, no official response from any security agency in the state has been provided regarding the recent bandit attack in Zurmi town. The local residents anxiously await decisive action from authorities to quell the threat and restore peace to the beleaguered community.
