The management of Rubiks, the private hostel where Hameedat resided, has confirmed the shocking death of the young student. Hameedat, who was undergoing her SIWES (Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme) program, took her own life due to a combination of financial strain and the pressures from an online scam.
In a statement released on a Wednesday, the hostel management revealed the harrowing circumstances that led to Hameedat’s demise. They stated that the primary cause of her suicide was related to financial mismanagement and the manipulation she faced from unscrupulous individuals on social media platforms.
Hameedat, known for her compassionate nature, was entrusted with a substantial sum of money by her mother. However, she encountered an individual on Snapchat who claimed that his mother was suffering from breast cancer and urgently needed N500,000 for treatment. Moved by empathy, she decided to lend him half of the N1 million meant for her mother’s use, with the boy promising to repay the borrowed amount.
Tragically, when Hameedat’s mother needed the money returned, the boy abruptly severed all contact with her, leaving her deeply distressed. To compensate for the missing N500,000, Hameedat turned to borrowing money from various loan apps.
Hameedat managed to gather N450,000 from these loan apps, adding her own savings of N50,000 to make up the borrowed N500,000. However, the burden of debt, coupled with the emotional toll of the online scam, pushed her to the brink.
The management further disclosed that on the fateful night, Hameedat ingested a deadly pesticide known as Sniper. Her roommate, whose identity is being withheld, discovered her in distress in the middle of the night. Hameedat was foaming at the mouth and vomiting, prompting her roommate to seek urgent help. She was rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), but tragically, she was declared dead.
The news of Hameedat’s suicide was confirmed by the Student Union President, Ologundudu Adesunkanmi, popularly known as Royal Prince. This devastating incident highlights the emotional and financial toll that online scams and financial pressures can have on vulnerable individuals. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health support and awareness among students and young adults.
