Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has taken decisive action to address the plight of Segun Olowookere, an indigene of the state who was convicted and sentenced to death for stealing a fowl.
The governor has ordered an immediate investigation into the case and directed steps for the exercise of the prerogative of mercy.
The intervention came after a viral interview featuring Segun’s mother, Folashade Olowookere, on the YouTube podcast of Nollywood actress Biola Adebayo. In the emotional interview, Folashade tearfully narrated the ordeal of her only son, who is currently incarcerated. The story sparked widespread public concern, drawing attention from Nigerians, including Governor Adeleke.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor emphasized his commitment to justice and fairness. He directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to ensure that Segun’s case is prioritized and concluded before the end of the year.
“I have read about the case. I recognize the separation of powers in our democracy. In this particular case, I have directed the Commissioner for Justice to initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man,” Adeleke stated.
He further affirmed the state’s dedication to upholding justice and equity, stressing, “Osun is a land of justice and equity. We must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives.”
The governor assured the public that his administration is treating the matter with urgency and that the necessary actions are being taken to ensure a fair resolution.
This intervention by Governor Adeleke has been widely commended as a reflection of responsive governance and a commitment to addressing the plight of vulnerable citizens in Osun State.
