Tensions have flared in Rumuepirikom, the hometown of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as gunfire erupted during the ongoing local government elections in Rivers State.
According to a report by Vanguard, a local source revealed that earlier in the day, unknown individuals had entered the community, issuing threats and warning residents not to partake in the voting process.
As electoral officials were on their way to the polling units in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, armed men stormed the scene, firing several rounds of gunshots.
The attackers, who remain unidentified, effectively seized control of the area, leaving residents terrified and preventing many from exercising their right to vote.
It was reported that a stray bullet struck one person, who was immediately rushed to a nearby medical center for urgent care.
