During a recent event in Nairobi, Kenya, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo made a lighthearted remark about his height while addressing the audience.
The occasion was the unveiling of Raila Odinga as the chairperson candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC).
As Obasanjo was invited to the podium by Kenyan President William Ruto, a protocol officer quickly placed a platform at the pulpit to help Obasanjo reach the microphone. However, upon reaching the stage, Obasanjo humorously removed the platform, stating, “I am not as short as you think I am,” which drew laughter from the audience.
The event highlighted Odinga’s candidacy, who previously served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. Obasanjo endorsed Odinga, emphasizing that his leadership is crucial for the entire East African community, especially in these challenging times of global conflicts and instability.
The election for the AUC senior leadership is scheduled for February 2025 during the African Union summit, where Odinga’s candidacy will be decided. Obasanjo underscored the importance of strong leadership, like Odinga’s, to navigate Africa through the current global challenges.
