In response to recent allegations circulating on social media, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has vehemently denied any involvement in a reported romance scam.
The allegations surfaced when an anonymous source on Twitter (now X) accused the Ooni of swindling a United States-based doctor, Mrs. Fagbule, of $180,000 under the guise of investment in healthcare infrastructure in Southwest Nigeria.
Otunba Moses Olafare, Director of Media And Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, dismissed the claims as false and baseless. He clarified that Mrs. Fagbule was neither known to the Ooni nor had any personal communication or relationship with him.
Olafare emphasized that the Ooni does not operate any personal social media accounts and urged Mrs. Fagbule to seek legal recourse through appropriate channels like the Police or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement addressing the issue, Olafare highlighted the palace’s concern over the misuse of social media platforms for fraudulent claims, urging the public to be cautious of such scams. He further criticized the dissemination of false information aimed at tarnishing the Ooni’s reputation, emphasizing the palace’s commitment to operating with transparency and integrity.
The statement also refuted the authenticity of a purported marriage proposal letter circulating online, asserting that the document did not match the palace’s official letterhead or the Ooni’s customary writing style. Olafare concluded by urging the public to rely on credible sources and legal avenues when faced with such allegations, rather than engaging in social media controversies.
