President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, on the party’s victory in the United Kingdom general election.
Keir Starmer emerged as the winner and is set to become the next Prime Minister of the UK after the Labour Party secured the required 326 parliamentary seats.
Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak accepted responsibility for the Conservative Party’s loss before submitting his resignation to the King.
In a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised Starmer for his determination and courage during his years in opposition and leadership of the Labour Party. Tinubu highlighted the Labour Party’s ability to reform, mobilize, and position itself for victory after 14 years as a testament to Starmer’s leadership qualities.
President Tinubu also extended his congratulations to the citizens and government of the United Kingdom, describing the country as a model of democracy and a long-standing partner of Nigeria.
“The President looks forward to deepening relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom in mutual areas of interest and in strengthening democratic institutions, as well as in building a safer and more prosperous future for the people of both countries,” the statement added.
