President Bola Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that the ongoing national reforms are aimed at strengthening the economy, not causing undue hardship. Addressing the nation on Wednesday following the 2024 Democracy Day celebrations, Tinubu emphasized that the current measures are designed to lay a robust foundation for sustainable future growth.
Expressing empathy for the public’s plight, President Tinubu acknowledged the severe economic challenges the nation is facing.
“There is no denying that the reforms have brought about hardship. However, these are essential steps needed to fix the economy in the long term, ensuring everyone has access to economic opportunities, fair wages, and proper compensation for their efforts,” he stated.
He reassured Nigerians of his commitment to remain attentive to their concerns and responsive to their needs throughout the reform process.
“Our economy has been in dire need of reform for decades, being overly reliant on oil revenues which created an imbalanced foundation,” Tinubu explained. “As we celebrate our political democracy, let us also pledge to achieve economic democracy.”
The President underscored his understanding of the current economic struggles and reiterated his promise to listen to the people’s voices and remain steadfast in addressing their issues.
“As we continue to implement these reforms, I will always be attuned to the people’s needs and never turn my back on you,” Tinubu affirmed.
His remarks come amid the implementation of various economic policies, reforms, and new taxes, which have contributed to rising inflation and an increased cost of living.
