In a bid to enhance access to essential goods and services for Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu has approved the commencement of the Consumer Credit Scheme.
This initiative allows Nigerians to make significant purchases on credit and pay over time, as confirmed by Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Media and Publicity.
Ngelale, in a statement released on Wednesday, explained that the Consumer Credit Scheme aims to bolster economic activity and support social mobility across the country. The scheme, to be administered by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), seeks to ensure that every economically active Nigerian has access to reliable credit, thereby improving their quality of life.
“In line with the President’s directive to expand consumer credit access to Nigerians, the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) has launched a portal for Nigerians to express interest in receiving consumer credit,” Ngelale stated.
He further elaborated that the scheme will enable Nigerians to purchase essential items such as housing, vehicles, education, and healthcare on credit, thus significantly impacting the national economy by stimulating demand for goods and services, enhancing job creation, and driving local industry growth.
“The scheme is poised to significantly impact the national economy, stimulating demand for goods and services, enhancing job creation, and ultimately driving local industry growth,” Ngelale added.
Initially, the scheme will target civil servants, with plans to expand its coverage to the general public in the future.
