The Rivers State House of Assembly passed the Local Government Amendment Bill into law on Monday, defying the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara’s non-assent.
Additionally, the Assembly disregarded the state High Court’s directive to maintain the status quo on the issue of extending the tenure of elected local government officials, which was part of the amendment.
In a move in line with the new law, the House also screened and confirmed members of the chairman and other members of the Assembly Service Commission.
