In a swift operation, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ondo State has nabbed Megbowon Taiwo, an American deportee allegedly involved in visa scams. Taiwo, who had been on the run after defrauding innocent citizens, was apprehended in Akure, the state capital.
According to reports, Taiwo had been deceiving individuals by promising to facilitate United States visas for them in exchange for hefty sums of money. His modus operandi involved luring victims with false claims of being a captain in the United States Army and assuring them of lucrative opportunities abroad.
The State Commandant of NSCDC, Oluyemi Ibiloye, revealed that Taiwo had duped a female victim in Okitipupa, collecting a staggering sum of N300,000 under the guise of securing a job opportunity in America. Following the complaint lodged against him on February 20, authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the matter.
“It was reported that the suspect, posing as a United States Army officer, initiated contact with the victim online on May 2, 2023. He convinced her of his credibility and promised her a job in America, requesting a substantial amount of money to facilitate the process,” stated Ibiloye.
“After receiving the payment, Taiwo absconded, cutting off all communication with the victim. However, through diligent efforts, our operatives were able to track him down in Akure,” he added.
The arrest underscores the commitment of NSCDC to clamp down on fraudulent activities and protect unsuspecting citizens from falling victim to scams. Taiwo is currently in custody pending further investigation and legal proceedings.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution when engaging in online transactions, especially with individuals offering dubious services or promising unrealistic opportunities abroad.
