The Supreme Court has affirmed the election victory of Ahmadu Fintiri, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, as the Governor of Adamawa State.
The unanimous judgment, delivered on Wednesday by Justice John Okoro, dismissed the appeal brought by Aishatu Ahmed Dahiru, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the last governorship election in the state.
Justice Okoro ruled that the declaration of Dahiru as the winner by the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) was illegal and void. He emphasized that, according to the Electoral Act, only the Returning Officer possesses the authority to officially announce election results, and any other individual doing so is acting unlawfully.
The Supreme Court further highlighted that the appellants, comprising Dahiru and the APC, failed to present credible evidence demonstrating non-compliance with relevant laws or proving that Dahiru secured the election with the majority of lawful votes. The judgment solidifies Fintiri’s position as the duly elected Governor of Adamawa State.
