The Supreme Court affirmed Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as the legitimate Governor of Kano State. Justice John Okoro, delivering the lead judgment, declared that the lower court erred in deducting 165,616 votes from Governor Yusuf’s total.
The apex court’s decision marks the conclusion of the legal disputes surrounding the March 18 governorship election in Kano State. The Kano governorship election tribunal had earlier nullified Governor Yusuf’s victory in September 2023, confirming Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful governor.
On November 13, the Court of Appeal upheld the tribunal’s verdict, stating that Abba Yusuf’s candidacy breached the Electoral Law, rendering him unqualified for the election. Dissatisfied with the ruling, Yusuf took the case to the Supreme Court seeking redress.
Details of the Supreme Court’s judgment are expected to be made available later.
