Recent data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reveals that the 2024 Henley Passport Index positions the Nigerian passport at 95th globally. The ranking is determined by the number of destinations accessible to Nigerian passport holders without the need for a prior visa.
According to the index, which assesses visa-free access for 199 passports to 227 travel destinations, individuals holding Nigerian passports are required to obtain visas for 181 destinations. This places the Nigerian passport lower in the rankings compared to its West African counterparts, with Ghana, Benin, and Togo securing positions at 76th, 79th, and 83rd, respectively.
In contrast, South Africa holds the 53rd spot globally, allowing its passport holders to travel to 108 destinations without the requirement of a visa. Notably, Japan has secured the top spot on the list, moving up from its previous second position. Japanese passport holders now enjoy visa-free access to 194 countries.
The global rankings also highlight other countries with powerful passports, with Singapore, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain joining Japan at the top of the list. These nations offer their passport holders extensive visa-free access, reflecting the global landscape of travel privileges.
The Henley Passport Index provides valuable insights into the mobility and visa requirements of passports worldwide, influencing travel choices and highlighting disparities in global access for passport holders.
