In the wake of Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s ascension to the position of state Governor following the unfortunate demise of his predecessor, sources reveal that discussions are underway to select a suitable deputy for the new leader.
It has been reported that certain party leaders are advocating for Governor Aiyedatiwa to choose his deputy from the northern senatorial district, which was the political base of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. These leaders argue that such a move would be a fitting tribute to Akeredolu and a means of fulfilling the remainder of his term.
However, an opposing viewpoint within Governor Aiyedatiwa’s supporters suggests that the Speaker’s position should shift to the northern senatorial district, while the deputy governorship should be awarded to the central senatorial district.
A party leader, speaking with Vanguard, emphasized that while they can provide suggestions, the ultimate decision rests with the Governor. “The Governor has the final say. He alone knows who can work with him. But for fairness, we’ll prefer that the governor looks towards the northern senatorial district to honour our late governor Akeredolu,” the leader stated.
An aide to Governor Aiyedatiwa assured the public that the Governor is a team player and that all stakeholders would be consulted in the decision-making process. “We can’t afford to make any mistake in our choice of the deputy governor. The governorship election is ahead,” the aide emphasized.
As the deliberations continue, it remains to be seen how the Governor will navigate the regional dynamics and party interests in making a decision that aligns with the aspirations of the people and the legacy of the late Governor Akeredolu.
