Justice Y C Bogoro of the Federal High Court Lagos, last week made a restraining order against the Inspector General of Police, the Head of IGP Monitoring Unit, DCP Adamu Elleman, The Nigeria Police Force, Erisco Foods Limited and its President/CEO, Chief Eric Umeofia, from re-arresting and detaining, Mrs. Chioma Edoka Okoli.
The Judge gave the order, while ruling in a fundamental rights enforcement suit brought before the court by human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong on behalf of Mrs. Okoli against Erisco Foods, IGP and others, with Suit Number: FHC/L/CS/2164/2023.
In the suit, Mrs Chioma Okoli through her lawyer is seeking for a ₦500 million compensation and a public apology from Erisco Foods over her arrest and detention.
When the matter came up on Wednesday, November 8, the lawyer prayed the court to grant an interim order restraining the respondents from re-arresting and detaining Chioma Okoli, pending the determination of the substantive suit. Justice Bogoro, ruling on the ex-parte application supported with a 41 paragraphed affidavit, deposed to by Mrs. Chioma, granted the prayers.
It will be recalled that Mrs. Chioma Edoka Okoli was arrested in September, following her Facebook product review made on Erisco Food’s tomato product.
The case has been adjourned to February 1,2024.
