MTN Nigeria has responded to a wave of user reports claiming that debts on subscribers’ accounts mysteriously disappeared in the early hours of Saturday, November 11. While many users celebrated the apparent debt clearance, MTN has clarified that the debts are still intact, attributing the confusion to a network glitch.
Subscribers took to social media to express their surprise and gratitude for the alleged debt clearance. A user on X mentioned that MTN had cleared a debt of 6.5k on their account, prompting others to check their balances.
In response to the social media buzz, MTN Nigeria acknowledged the situation on its official X handle. The network provider explained that there were challenges with the Xtratime balance enquiry, leading subscribers to believe their balances had been cleared. MTN clarified that the debt was not erased; rather, it was a system glitch causing confusion.
MTN said, “Y’ello, Apologies for the delayed responses. Please be aware that we are having challenges with the Xtratime balance enquiry, leading subscribers to assume the balance was cleared.
“We are aware that some of our customer’s Xtratime debt was cleared. It was a system glitch, the airtime was not cleared.
“The support team is currently investigating, Service operation team is following up, Warm regards.”
The MTN support team is currently investigating the issue, and the service operation team is actively addressing the glitch. The network provider reassured subscribers that steps are being taken to rectify the situation.
This incident highlights the impact of technical glitches on customer experience and the need for prompt communication from service providers to address any concerns or confusion among users.
