A grand mass wedding ceremony, organized and generously sponsored by the Kano State government, commenced Friday, joining 3,600 eager participants, including widows, widowers, divorcees, and spinsters.
The heartwarming event took place at the Central Mosque within the Emir’s Palace, where the couples were united in matrimony following Islamic traditions. The ceremony was graced by esteemed dignitaries, such as the State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Governor Yusuf, in his address during the ceremony, revealed that the mass wedding reflects the government’s commitment to preserving the culture and tradition of Kano State. Additionally, he emphasized that this event offers the couples a memorable and cost-effective means to formalize their unions. The celebrations will continue on Saturday, with the commencement of wedding ceremonies and a traditional “walima” feast, to be held at the Government House in Kano.
“The event reflects the deep-rooted values and unity of the people of Kano State and highlights the state government’s dedication to preserving traditions while ensuring a bright future for its people,” Governor Yusuf stated.
Notably, similar weddings for intending couples were held at different mosques across all 44 local government areas of the state, showcasing the broad participation and enthusiasm for this initiative.
In a noteworthy prelude to the mass wedding, the Hisbah Board, last week, conducted a rigorous screening process. They identified and excluded intending couples who tested positive for Hepatitis B, HIV, sickle cell disease, or pregnancy.
Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, the Commander General of the Hisbah Board, commended the state government’s efforts in sponsoring this mass wedding. He lauded the timing of the event, given that economic hardships have hindered many individuals from realizing their dreams of marriage.
The mass wedding not only serves as a symbol of cultural preservation but also stands as a testament to the commitment of the Kano State government to providing its citizens with opportunities for a brighter future, united by the bonds of matrimony.
