Victims of a cylinder chemical explosion which occurred on Friday in the Sharada Industrial Quarters area of Kano State have been taken to the hospital.
It was gathered that the victims, numbering over 200 inhaled dangerous chemical from a dismantled cylinder and had to be rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Sharada Industrial Hospital and Ja’en Hospital in Kano for treatment.
Some of them were said to have suffocated and gone unconscious after inhaling the chemical which was released into the atmosphere based on the activities of metal scrappers
The development was confirmed by the coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Kano State, Nuradeen Abdullahi.
He explained that the incident occurred around 4pm.
“The cylinder chemical explosion occurred on Friday at about 4:00 p.m., at Sharada Industrial Area,” he said.
“The victims were suffocated and unconscious.”
The chief medical director of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Hussaini Muhammad however confirmed that most of those brought in are already in a stable condition, stating categorically that 65of the 70 persons brought to the facility are now okay.
Thirty-five victims received treatment at Sharada Industrial Hospital and 96 at Ja’en Hospital,” he added.
The development comes after reports went round that there was a commotion at Sheka quarters in the Kumbotso local government area of Kano State on Thursday night after a loud explosion was heard in the area.
Reports revealed that no fewer than twenty residents were severely injured in the explosion suspected to be caused by a gas cylinder.
The said gas explosion reportedly went off around 8 pm on Thursday night at a gas cylinder refilling shop. Many shops according to reports were wrecked by fire last night.
