The embattled former Commander of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force, Abba Kyari, has alleged that his life is in danger at Kuje prison.
Kyari approached the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday to release him on bail because he was not safe in prison.
At the resumed hearing, counsel to the embattled police officer, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), told the court that his client was attacked by hardened criminals inside the correctional centre.
His lawyer appealed to the court to grant the fresh application to reconsider the request his client earlier made for bail following the reported attack on his life in prison.
Ikpeazu said the bail request should be granted considering the fact that some of the criminals Kyari arrested while performing his duties are also in prison.
Aside from Kyari, three other police officers that are equally on trial over the alleged offence, Sunday Ubia, Simon Agirigba and John Nuhu also begged the court to okay their release on bail on safety grounds.
However, ASP Bawa James, who is the 3rd defendant in the matter, did not request bail.
Opposing the bail request, NDLEA counsel, Sunday Joseph, said that the matter was scheduled for review of the facts of the 6th and 7th defendants who pleaded guilty to the counts preferred against them.
Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne (6th and 7th defendants) were the two alleged drug traffickers that were arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
Umeibe and Ezenwanne had pleaded guilty to five, six and seven counts preferred against them and are being remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre.
